Habanos

The iconic and legendary market leader of Cuban cigars

In 1959 Fidel Castro eliminated all of the leading family-based cigar producers in Cuba and consolidated them into one umbrella corporation, now known as Habanos S.A., the government-regulated company with various subsidiary brands. Cuban cigars are considered the most prestigious and coveted, since Columbus discovered America in 1492, and with a history dating back hundreds of years prior to that in local aboriginal communities.

Cuban cigars, particularly those produced by Habanos, were always a sign of stature and wealth, power and prestige, signifying a sense of value and position of leadership within society. This is particularly true in Cuba, with cigars of the finest quality originating from the country, and even certain lines and products designated exclusively for foreign diplomats and political figureheads.

True story: with the rise of Castro and the political climate affecting many Cuban families that were heavily and intensively involved in producing and trading cigars, many fled to surrounding areas. Some of these countries today are also known for their cigars, such as the Dominican Republic. Cuban communities did in fact settle and establish strong roots in these areas, but the secret to much of Cuban cigars’ outstanding tobacco quality lies in the soil, farming, and the climate conditions.

The land and climate support a remarkable end product that leverages the true essence of a cigar’s quality and flavor. And so, many retailers and consumers will still prefer Cuban cigars originating in Cuba – from farming to production, and manufacturing. The period of processing the tobacco for it to reach its premium and unmistakably unique flavor, and richness, and ridding it of toxins requires careful attention to fermentation procedures. These rituals and processes purify tobacco leaves to deliver a smooth, hand-rolled, premium, deluxe Cuban cigar from Habanos S.A.

In 1966 a product line to deliver these exclusive cigars to the general public was launched, established in 1989 for export, distribution, and retailers.

Montecristo

An acclaimed brand from Habanas S.A. originating in Havana, this premium Cuban cigar’s name indeed originates from the tale of The Count of Monte Cristo, with an overall flavor and quality that’s tailored to the demands of smokers, with products like the majestic Montecristo and others that are smaller. History tells us that a reader of the story shared it with the Torcedores, local cigar makers at H.Upmann factory in Havana, and in 1935 the brand came to be and remains a top-selling product today.

Romeo y Julieta

A romantically designed and named brand, this quality Cuban cigar indeed entrances smokers with its British roots and its correlation to Shakespeare’s epic story of the beloved couple. Winston Churchill’s indulgence in the product inspired a line named for the British politician’s passion for this cigar, with the product’s roots dating back as far as 1875.

Partagas

If ever there was a famous brand that originated in Cuba of its finest cigars, with its factory originally established in 1845 by Don Jaime Partagas, this product is recognized for its range of shapes and sizes, with origins rooted in Havana.

Hoyo de Monterrey

With brand origins rooted in the plantation the product line is named after, this cigar is famous for the richness of its soil, impeccable farming conditions, and unmatched fertile land that delivers a vitola of unparalleled quality. Each one is filled with long filler, handcrafted for excellence, while also offering a lighter, milder, and exquisite aroma that’s accompanied with delicacy.

Trinidad

A brand that was once exclusively available to foreign diplomats as a token of appreciation, Trinidad is named in honor of 16th century Santisima Trinidad city in the Cuban southern coast. While dating back to 1969 and being an exclusive gift to visitors of high political stature, Trinidad was made available in limited quantities to the general public in 1998. Medium strength and a stunningly fragrant cigar, Trinidad’s vitolas vary in size and flavor but always promise outstanding quality.

H. Upmann

Founder of this cigar, Mr. Herman Upmann, named the product for his historical passion and love for Cuba, originally a banker and cigar-lover. This cigar has acquired gold medals in just over 10 international fairs over the years for its refined flavor. While Upmann settled in Cuba in 1844, the brand persists with a name of glory, acclaimed for its distinct aroma, medium strength, and unique flavor to date.
